How do I stay overnight in the camp and in the desert?
The camp is an ecolodge with chalets (bungalows made of clay) and bamboo huts on the beach. This combines simple living in harmony with nature.
The two nights in the desert we will sleep under the open sky on camping mats and in sleeping bags.

How and how long will we be in the desert?
The climate in the Sinai is dry. The sun can be very warm and strong. We will spend three days and two nights in the desert. The prerequisite is an average physical and mental resilience. The luggage will be carried by camels and we will move through the desert with daypacks in the caravan. We spend the lunch time in the shade of the rocks (total walking time is about 4-5 hours a day with a break in between, on the 3rd day we will be back around noon). A camel can be ridden by a traveler if necessary or on a rotating basis. We travel with little luggage: In order to concentrate on the essentials, unnecessary things like maps, money, make-up, etc. we will leave in the camp.

What do you have to consider regarding culture and religion?
Since 1990 I have been in the Sinai, in BASATA and in the desert again and again – even for longer periods.
The Bedouins in Sinai live a simple life. They have their own mentality and their religion plays an important role in their everyday life. I always find it enriching to get to know another culture and way of life and to be allowed to be part of it.
The Bedouins are hospitable and they know the desert like nobody else. They will guide and accompany us safely on our desert tour. They will take care of the camels, the setting up and breaking down of our campsites, the fire and the preparation of the meals.

How is the safety for travelers in South Sinai?
South Sinai is considered a quiet and safe place in opposite to North Sinai. Safety for travelers takes a high priority in South Sinai.

What else is important and good to know?
The retreat to the desert offers you the opportunity to get closer to the self and to the deeper being, to reduce yourself to the essentials, to have new experiences, to pause, to leave old habits behind, to expand inner spaces and to discover yourself on an unforgettable journey in a fascinating landscape.
Immerse yourself in another country and in a foreign culture and mentality. Allow the process within you and embrace it.

What are my options for visits and/or extensions to the trip?
The desert retreat is planned as a group offer for 9 days. You are welcome to extend your stay beyond that.
Various excursions such as a visit to St. Catherine’s Monastery with an ascent of Mount Moses, a trip to Petra (Jordan), etc. are possible or you can extend your stay in BASATA.
